MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH

MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH

Lebanon, Illinois

"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth,

and the truth shall make you free" John 8:31-32.

Here’s the church.  Here’s the steeple.  Open it up … and see all the people.

The building was dedicated on November 1, 1992; the steeple was added May 15, 1998; but the people of Messiah Lutheran Church in Lebanon, Illinois have been meeting regularly, in one place or another, since November 1, 1987.  Began as a mission project of the Southern Illinois District – LCMS,  Messiah continues today to serve God’s people in and around Lebanon with Word and Sacrament ministry focused ever and always on Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior..

Messiah currently has some 80-plus members with average weekly attendance ranging around 53.  New members and visitors are welcomed like family, and the still relatively small size of the congregation affords a level of personal connection that is often lost in larger congregations.

Many have described our flock as warm and friendly, and we sincerely hope everyone finds it the same way, but visitors have also observed that Messiah really seems anchored “in the Word.”  Our services are designed to deliver Jesus and His gifts to His people, and they reflect the very best of historic Lutheran worship.  We use the new Lutheran Service Book and we love to sing, so our services are enhanced by the rich theology of traditional Lutheran hymnody.

Bible studies and classes are typically well-attended, and they focus on the Bible and on the historic confessions of the Lutheran church.  The study is serious, but enjoyable, in an almost familial setting led by a loving and generally good-natured shepherd, and we always love to have new “sheep” join us whenever they can.

The congregation, like its Reformation forbearers, celebrates Holy Communion each Sunday, and it gathers for special services during Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and on Thanksgiving Day.  Informational (and adult confirmation) classes are offered from time to time and as requested, and the Church rejoices as each new member is welcomed into the fellowship of Christ’s Church.

On November 4, 2007, Messiah celebrated 20 years together as a flock gathering in Lebanon, and its 15th year in its sanctuary/building.  For over 20 years God has served His people in and around Lebanon via His Word and the Sacraments utilizing this little blood-bought and blood-washed flock..  We thank God for His grace, patience, goodness, mercy, and most of all, His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and for His Spirit that continues to work through some pretty ordinary means to preserve, protect, and defend His people, and to expand His kingdom among us.  To Him be the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
